Résumé : Cette conférence vise à présenter l’histoire des migrations des travailleurs vietnamiens sous contrat en Nouvelle-Calédonie entre 1891 et 1939 ainsi que l’organisation des retours au début des années 1960. Il s’agira d’inscrire cette histoire particulière dans le contexte général de la colonisation française dans cette ile du Pacifique pour mieux comprendre la position qu’occupent les travailleurs vietnamiens sous contrat, dans la société coloniale locale tant sur le plan du statut juridique que sur le plan des conditions de vie. La question des retours des travailleurs bloqués en Nouvelle-Calédonie par la Seconde Guerre Mondiale vers le Vietnam qui s’opèrent entre 1960 et 1964 et les conditions d’accueil fait l’objet d’une réflexion conclusive.
Abstract : This conference aims to present the history of migration of Vietnamese contract workers to New Caledonia between 1891 and 1939 and the organization of returns in the early 1960s. This history is set in the general context of the French colonization of this Pacific island to better understand the position of Vietnamese contract workers in local colonial society, in terms of both legal status and living conditions. The question of the return to Vietnam of workers stranded in New Caledonia by the Second World War between 1960 and 1964 and their reception is the subject of a concluding discussion.
